The following FAQs have been developed to communicate the State Board of Education and Orange County Schools’ renewal credit requirements for all licensed employees.

What are the Renewal Credit Requirements for Teachers?

1 credit must be in the content/academic licensure area

1 credit must be in literacy

1 credit must be in technology (this is an Orange County Schools’ requirement)

4.5 credits can be in any area

Total credits 7.5

When are the Renewal Credit requirements effective?

These requirements are in effect August 1, 2011.

What “counts” as a literacy credit?

Any professional development related to the Reading, Writing, Speaking/Listening, or Language strands in the ELA/Literacy Common Core State Standards counts as a literacy credit.

Will Orange County teachers earn any literacy credits during the 2011-2012 school year for the district-wide professional development on the ELA/Literacy Common Core and NC Essential Standards?

Orange County teachers will earn 1 literacy credit for professional development on the ELA/Literacy Common Core and NC Essential Standards.   This credit is part of the 2011-2012 Common Core and More/Early-Release workshop that each school’s OCSTORM facilitator is managing. 

If I’ve earned reading credits under the previous Renewal Credit requirements, will these “count” as literacy credits?

Any reading credit will qualify as a literacy credit.

Can I earn renewal credits for completing the National Board Certification process or renewing my National Board Certification?

Teachers completing the National Board Certification process may earn all 7.5 credits.

Teachers renewing their National Board Certification in their 10 year cycle may earn two credits, 1 for content and 1 for literacy.

What are the Renewal Credit Requirements for principals and assistant principals?

3 credits must align with Standards 2 (instructional), 4 (human resources), and 5
(managerial leadership) of the School Executives evaluation. 
4.5 credits can be in any area

Total credits 7.5

What are the Renewal Credit Requirements for other licensed staff (social workers if they hold a school social worker license issued by NCDPI, nurses if they hold a school nurse license issued by NCDPI, psychologists, audiologists, speech-language pathologists, EC facilitators, technology facilitators, guidance counselors, media specialists, central office administrators)?

1 credit must be in technology (Orange County Schools’ requirement)

1 literacy

5.5 credits can be in any area

Total credits 7.5

What are the Renewal Credit Requirements for individuals on a validated license?

Individuals on a validated license must earn 15 renewal credits in 3 years (5 per year).

If I attend a workshop or participate in professional development outside of the district, how do I earn renewal credit?

You must complete a Request for CEU Approval form and a Certificate of Completion.  The Request for CEU Approval form is located on the district website under Staff<Professional Development.   http://www.orange.k12.nc.us/staff/staff_development.html

If I participate in a workshop or participate in professional development within the district, how do I earn renewal credit?

Teachers must register for workshops in OCSTORM, Orange County’s Teachers Online Registration Manager.  Directions for logging into OCSTORM are located on the district website under Staff<OCSTORM.     http://www.orange.k12.nc.us/staff/staff_development.html

How can I check how many Renewal Credits I’ve earned?

You can check your Renewal Credits by logging into OCSTORM on a school computer.   Click on Renewal Credits.  You will see the following message:

Follow the prompts provided.

If my license expires this school year, how does NCDPI know to renew my license?

OCS Human Resources verifies the renewal credits each person has earned and processes the renewal electronically so NCDPI receives the information.
